It’s a Fire That’s Carrying You
We spend our time a-filling up our heads with every rule,
Like a student sitting weary on a bench at Sunday school.
We memorize the verses and we try to play the part,
But a head that’s full of “knowing” can’t fix a broken heart.
You see, a “head-word” is a burden that you’re trying hard to lift,
But a “heart-word” is a fire… and a fire is a gift.
God didn’t want a scholar who could pass a mental test,
He was looking for a heart that would put surrender to the test.
He wanted to strip down the old and give a brand-new start,
By moving all the Truth from out the mind and to the heart.
And when that Word gets settled, it’s a power you can’t tame, Like a fire shut up in your bones, a living, holy flame.
You don’t need to check a calendar to know it’s time to speak,
God’s mission isn’t waiting for a day when you’re not weak.
When He gives a man a mandate and He sets the soul ablaze,
The Truth will find its opening without a week of delays.
It’s the quiet, steady glow that stays when all the crowds are gone,
The kind of light that’s burning from the midnight to the dawn.
So stop your heavy trying and just let the Spirit flow,
Let the old life turn to ashes so the new life starts to show.
The people see the change in you because the act is finally through—
It ain’t a message that you’re carrying…
