The R in friend can stand for a lot but two words that stuck out at me as I was doing this topic is rend and respect.
With both words they go hand in hand with each other. If you have respect with a close friend, you try not to rend( tear each other up) by saying mean things about them.
What thing about a true friend they can take and received criticism from each other in away it will build each other up. When having respect we try not to tear each other down for the Bible instructs us to do this.
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.Colossians 3:16 KJV
One version goes even further to say this in another passage.
Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 ESV
Again as we look into 1 Samuel 18 we see a great friendship happening between David and Jonathan. I do believe they build each other up when they were feeling down. I think possibility they respected each other. The bond was great between the two.
That is what a friend is about having the same type of faith in each other. They believed each other, they focus on the good experience of their relationship. They have respect and build each other up with encouraging words.
We all need a close friend to share things with. Without that special person, could be your spouse, a neighbor, a person from church, and the list goes on, we would have no way in releasing and getting thing off our chest.
Remember a friend is more than a acquaintance. It a person you spend most of your time with. It that person you confide in. Do you have that special someone? Do you know Christ want to be not only your friend but he wants to be your Savior. Just spend time with him today. He is there and want to spend that special moment with you. Let him in and you will be so happy you did.
Next time the I in friend common interest keep a friendship fresh and going strong.
