What was the purpose behind Jesus delaying himself for two days as he get the news about Lazarus. When a family member is sick or near death we try to be at their bedside. Once we get the news we want to drop everything and be there for that loved one. Yes it does hurt to loose a person you love.
Now just think about Lazarus and those that was around him at the time of his death. What was the people saying about Jesus and why was he not there. They knew Jesus was able to save Lazarus from dying just as he done so many before.
Jesus told his disciples that he was going to wake him from his sleep. This wasn’t your normal resting sleep but this sleep was unto death. One thing we have to say about this was everything was in God’s hands. The purpose and plan was already set into motion before people knew it.
Some key points to make out as we continue to look at The delay purpose in the case of Lazarus are as follows. The evidence all points that Lazarus is dead. No getting around that. Second evidence to defend why the delay was for a reason to let others see who Jesus really is. Third point to see is people talked, and came to know Jesus. There will be more but let get started.
Who did Jesus say he is? The resurrection and life.
Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this? John 11:25-26 KJV
What Jesus was saying here is when you feel like you are dead inside. When you have face it all and you feel hopeless, no way out. Jesus said because he is resurrection and life, those who feel dead inside if you believe in him he can do something new for you. He can come in and resurrect you, if you believe. He will change you and give you a newness and a peace you never known before. You shall live again.
And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died? Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days. Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God? Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me. And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.John 11:37, 39-42 KJV
Now people have seen or heard Jesus do miracles before. Yet they didn’t understand what was about to take place. They are looking at the point well he wouldn’t died if Jesus was here in the first place. That wasn’t the plan God had set in place. It was a bigger miracles that was about to happen.
The evidence here people new Lazarus was dead, because he was in the tomb. He laid in the tomb for 4 days now. The body was giving off bad odor because the decaying process had begun. The miracle wasn’t to heal Lazarus when he was alive but to bring him back from the dead after four days. God’s Glory is about to be seen. All evidence now points to the fact Lazarus is dead and in the tomb.
When Jesus called Lazarus name he got up, all bound in his grave clothes. Jesus said unloose him. The evidence now points to a person that was dead and is now alive. How can it be. This only prove one thing Jesus is greater than death.
And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with grave clothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.John 11:43-44 KJV
Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him. But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done. John 11:45-46 KJV
When we see God move in a way that goes beyond what the mind can comprehend it is his Glory being released. There is no other explanation that can be possible. What Jesus said, he was going to do earlier in this chapter it was done. It was done to let the people know who Jesus is, to see the glory of God at hand. Bring about change in a person’s life. Many believed from this miracle. They even told others about it. Not sure if they were believers or not but they told the Pharisees of what Jesus did.
For some they miss the truth about Jesus, but for others their eyes are open to the truth. To witness a move God before your eyes and it didn’t change you than you are blinded by the truth.
The purpose and plan for what Jesus did was to bring God glory and to let other see who Jesus really is.
