life interrupted. As Jesus took a detour. John 4:1-43

Today we are looking into detours. We we be looking at

He left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee. And he must needs go through Samaria. John 4:3‭-‬4 KJV.

Why Samaria, was it because it was the quickest route or did Jesus knew something before hand. The Jews and the Samaritans wasn’t best of friends. Still Jesus said he must need go through Samaria.

Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour. There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink. John 4:6‭-‬7 KJV

It was a long journey for Jesus. He decided to stop at this well. The well was known as Jacob’s well. A lady came by and Jesus ask her for a drink.

Then the conversation got going between the woman and Jesus.

Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans. Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. John 4:9‭-‬10 KJV

The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water? Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle? Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw. John 4:11‭-‬15 KJV

What was the need for that detour. The need was for that woman. Jesus took the short cut through Samaria just to let that woman know about the new life that God can offer. Jesus told the woman a lot about her life and also told the woman how she can receive a life changing experience.

The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things. Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he. The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men, Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ? But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of. Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work. And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman, which testified, He told me all that ever I did. And many more believed because of his own word John 4:25‭-‬26‭, ‬28‭-‬29‭, ‬32‭, ‬34‭-‬34‭, ‬39‭, ‬41 KJV.

To really tie everything together was the detour about the lady or the others in the town as well. Once Jesus told the lady about her life, she went and told others about him. She got so excited about what Jesus said she left her water pot behind.

When we come to know Christ in a personal way, we should leave things behind. Meaning all that matters is serving God. Jesus also said he has meat to eat. He wasn’t talking about real food, but to do the will of the Father that sent him and to finish the work.

As the chapter go on many came to know Jesus and understood the work he had to do. Not only he took the detour but also stayed an extra two days as the crowd came around him.
